I’ve become so disenchanted with George W. Bush and his whole Administration that I even tried a “counting backward” widget on my sidebar thinking I could edit it daily counting backward to see the number of days left before January 20, 2009 (the next inaugural), but daily editing became cumbersome so I took it off. I want to go on record by saying that I did not vote for Bush, but when he was elected, like the John Wayne quote brought up by various talking heads recently, I said to myself, “well I didn’t vote for him, but he’s my president and I’ll support him. I hope he does a good job.” Well he didn’t! And when I think it can’t get much worse, it does! (The Libby commutation Tuesday and impending pardon sometime next year! Yeah, it’ll happen, just wait and see!) And I no longer support him, I just try to put up with him, hoping he doesn’t do too much more damage, or that somebody with the power will stop him before he does.
So today when I opened my local newspaper, The Salt Lake City Tribune of SLC, Utah, this cartoon looked like one made just for me. I can’t quite read the name of the cartoonist but it’s there in the corner if you look. He/she gets ALL the credit. We have some of the best cartoonists here!

I agree. President Bush has performed at a, excuse the pun, bush-league level. Scooter should not have been let off the hook so easily. It upsets me to see someone do such a poor job in one of the most important positions in the world. Because of that, I feel for Lady Liberty pictured in the cartoon. Poor us. And by the way, I really enjoy reading your blog and thank you for reading mine.
I am impressed that a newspaper in SLC ran that cartoon.
I never voted for Bush, and in fact, I never felt I supported him. Call it arrogance, but I knew he would do a terrible job. I wish I could tell you I’m encouraged by the current crop of would-be nominees. I’m still waiting for one of them to stand up and tell it like it is, not parrot the military-corporate line.

I couldn’t figure out who the cartoonist is by the signature, but it isn’t the Trib’s usual political cartoonist, Pat Bageley. Hmmm.

I heard the John Wayne quotation on Countdown in Keith’s special comment (Yay Keith!!); who else was using it? I typically find that only Keith is doing that kind of reporting on tv these days…

It is surprising that our red state would have a newspaper that would run political cartoons like that; fortunately they do. But there’s always that OTHER paper, The Deseret News, for the other 62% of us to read. I don’t read it. As to “supporting” Bush, I didn’t mean that in any sweeping way, but more in the way of wanting to be surprised by people I may be wrong about. Many thanks for the kind words of encouragement!

As for the John Wayne quote, I believe it WAS Keith Olberman who first used it, then it seemed to catch on like wildfire and I saw it repeated several times–can’t remember who and where.
